Comprehensive Guide to Portable Appliance Testing

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is an essential health and safety practice that ensures that electrical appliances are safe for use, thus minimising the risk of accidents. This health and safety training course lays out the principles, techniques and regulations relevant to PAT to help you safeguard lives and protect property. We go through electrical terminologies and abbreviations and outline the responsibilities of trained PAT technicians.

The advancement of technology has led to an increased dependence on electrical equipment for everyday tasks. These devices sometimes malfunction, which can create hazards like electrical shocks, arc flashes, fires and even explosions. Regular portable appliance testing (PAT) is an important health and safety technique used to manage and minimise these risks. What is PAT? Is it a legal requirement? What types of equipment require PAT testing? We answer such questions and more as we delve deep into the details of PAT. We begin with an introduction to PAT and discuss the importance of appliance testing.
To test safety and functionality in electrical setups effectively, it is crucial to understand the fundamental definitions and terms used in electrical engineering. We analyse electrical quantities, clarify their relationships and explore related terminologies and abbreviations. The course also explains how to calculate insulation resistance and shows you how to carry out in-service inspections, safety checks and more. We cover every step of the testing procedure, including user checks, visual inspections, and everything in between.
The course then describes the essential test instruments that ensure accurate results and minimise the risk of electrical injuries. Finally, we explain how to assess risk and keep proper inspection and equipment status records. This course has no prerequisites and suits anyone who wants to work as a PAT technician in countries like the UK, Ireland and the Antipodes. It also suits those who want to work in electrical safety or take on PAT responsibilities in their organisation.
